Less than a week after work finished on a major Midlands interstate, a key connector between two others will close.
The state Department of Transportation announced that Exit 64B on westbound Interstate 20, which allows drivers to transfer onto Interstate 26 westbound, will close at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 28, remaining closed through 6 a.m. Monday, May 1.
The closure is part of the Carolina Crossroads project to redo the interchange of I-20, I-26 and Interstate 126 (commonly referred to as “Malfunction Junction”) and will “allow contractors to perform ramp tie-in construction,” according to a release.
“Motorists are advised to use caution and plan accordingly in case of delays.”
The work is part of the second phase of the project, which will “reconstruct the interchange at Broad River Road and I-20 to improve traffic,” the release explains. “The project will also lengthen access from I-20 Westbound onto I-26 Westbound to minimize traffic congestion.”
The recommended detour during the construction is as follows:

DOT concluded bridge rehabilitation work along Interstate 77 in the counties of Lexington and Richland on April 22 after completely closing each direction of the highway for alternating eight-day periods.
