Meeting Street Music Fest to return for year two in West Columbia

Posted

They’re running it back in West Columbia.

The Meeting Street Music Fest, the free city-produced music festival and block party that attracted a big crowd in its first outing last September, is set to return for a second go Sept. 7.

“This highly anticipated event will showcase an incredible lineup of multiple genres of music, including nationally and regionally renowned artists on multiple stages throughout the River District,” a Facebook event announcing the 2024 date proclaims.

The imprint of the festival is indicated to be the same as in the first year, on the 500-700 blocks of Meeting Street.

Last year, the city made good on its promise to bring in a national touring act, crowning a six-act lineup with ‘80s and ‘90s R&B star Meli'sa Morgan and traveling Billy Joel tribute band Turnstiles, while also including local and regional acts.

A spokesperson for the city told the Chronicle leading up to last year’s event that Bill's Music Shop & Pickin' Parlor, the local bluegrass mainstay that was somewhat frustrated to be located immediately behind the main stage last year, was looking at looping in the city’s Riverwalk Amphitheater, down Meeting Street near the Gervais Street Bridge, and having Bill’s program it. The initial event information doesn’t mention that being part of the festival, though the promise of music throughout the River District would seem to indicate additional stages outside the main festival imprint.

City block parties in the district have become a go-to move for the municipality, as the spring Art on State event and the autumnal Fall Back Fest annually close down State Street and Kinetic Derby Day sends homemade soap box cars racing down Meeting Street each April.
