Downtown Lexington will have another restaurant next week.
The town’s new Barrio Tacos + Tequila + Whiskey location will welcome its first customers Oct. 23. Per a post to Barrio Lexington’s Facebook, the restaurant will open at 3 p.m. and the first 50 people in line will receive free queso for a year. Neither the Barrio website nor the Facebook page specify what the restaurant’s hours will be moving forward.
The restaurant was announced in February as taking the ground-floor space in Icehouse on Main, the privately held building built at 105 W Main St. as part of the project that also installed the Icehouse Amphitheater that sits immediately behind the new building.
The Lexington spot will be the chain’s first location in the state, adding to 17 existing locations in six other states, according to the Barrio website. All but one of the other locations are north of the Mason-Dixon line — in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire — with the other Southern outlier being in Florida.
Per the website, the restaurant’s menu features such twists on Mexican cuisine as tacos with hard and soft shells, a La Tierra bowl with Coca-Cola-marinated steak, and Nashville-hot mac and cheese.
The restaurant joins what should continue to grow as a hot corner for dining and nightlife, with Alodia’s Cucina Italiana operating next door, and Nicky’s Pizzeria, Keg Cowboy, Craft Axe Throwing and the amphitheater all already sitting at that end of Lexingotn’s core Main Street block. In addition, the wine bar Molto Vino and the Southwest-meets-Asian concept TakoSushi have been announced to open across the street from Barrio, with Molto Vino recently telling the Chronicle it hopes to open next year.
