Kayakers and canoeists took to the cold Saluda River for the Millrace Massacre and Iceman Championships, held in front of onlookers at the Saluda Riverwalk Jan. 6. Undeterred by the early rain, racers who showed up for the 24th year of the event competed in the more beginner-friendly Straight Shooter race, along with the more grueling Millrace Massacre, and the Iceman Championships, which challenge competitors to kayak, run and swim.

“What started out as a wet and dreary day ended as the biggest event yet!” organizers posted. “Tons of new faces coming in to enjoy this race with folks who have been competing in the Iceman for years. We are stoked for numero 25 next year.”
