Reggaetronic Music Festival Returns to Lake Murray This Weekend

Posted

After a pandemic-related break in 2020, the floating music festival Reggaetronic returned for a second straight year to Lake Murray on June 4 with headliners Henry Fong and Brian Dawe joining several local and regional acts.

Festival founder Ronnie Alexander said the feedback they’ve received so far tells them it is good timing.

“People being off for two or three years are ready to get back out there and have some fun in the sun,” he said. “We have experienced a heightened amount of response to this year’s event for that very reason.”

The festival, only accessible by boat and presented on a floating stage at Spence Island, was in a unique position.

“The pandemic caused us to increase some safety measures,” Alexander said. “However, we are probably one of the only events in the world that was already incorporating social distancing, with the different boats of patrons side by side.”

He said putting on a floating festival isn’t much different, logistically, from a land-based model.

“We are fortunate to use an incredible production team from trucking to rigging, craning and dock services,” Alexander explained “They do this every day, so it’s nothing new for them. Throw in some sound and stage guys, and you’ve got a show.”

It’s not a show without the artists appearing on stage, and Alexander said that even those who have been skeptical of the concept have been completely on board once they see it all work.

“The bands are definitely into it,” he said. “Once the boat pulls around the side of the island and they see the production floating in the middle of the water, they’re always blown away.”

This year’s headliner is Henry Fong, who has made a name for himself with guest spots on EDM tracks and a number of his own reggae-infused caribbean dance, R&B and Latin-influenced singles such as 2022’s island-flavored “Morena” and the techno house sound of “Back To Me” (with ALRT).

DJ Brian Dawe also appears. His resume includes working with huge stars from Backstreet Boys and Rhianna to Major Lazer and Avicii. He was a cast member on VH1’s “Master of the Mix” and has performed on stages all over the world.

Regional talent appearing includes Wilmington (N.C.) act The Signal Fire, the easygoing band Sun-Dried Vibes and the more rock-leaning local act Lefty at the Washout.

A portion of proceeds from the festival benefits the Jamil Temple Shriners contributions to the Children’s Hospital of South Carolina. Alexander said it’s easy to enjoy the festival if you just follow a few simple guidelines.

“Boat responsibly, bring an anchor, and don’t turn on your music on your boat,” he advised. “Bring some sunscreen, plenty of water, and whatever else you might like.

“If you follow those rules it will be hard not to have fun.”
