River Bluff linebacker Griffin Lindler and Chapin libero Ella Yong were voted male and female athletes of the week in Chronicle Country.
It was another talented pool of candidates this week. For male athlete of the week, Gilbert running back Jaylen Jay earned a nomination and for the first time this year, a male volleyball player got a nomination as Airport’s Riley Wilbourne earned a spot on this weekend’s ballot. For the female athlete of the week, Gilbert volleyball’s Meredith McEnulty and Lexington golf standout Taryn Smoak earned nominations.
Lindler was voted male athlete of the week with his role in the River Bluff defense holding firm in the second half of their dramatic 29-28 come from behind victory against Dorman.
In that game, Lindler recorded eight tackles and was credited for half a sack and a team high two and a half tackles for loss. Lindler was a vocal presence and made some big plays to keep Dorman’s offense off the scoreboard for the entire second half.
Chapin had an active week against Gilbert, Dutch Fork and White Knoll and it was Yong who played a vital role in the Eagles going 2-1 in that tough stretch. Yong is one of the team’s defensive specialists and stepped up as a libero and setter last week.
Overall, Yong was credited with 12 aces , 23 digs, 21 assists and helped lead the Eagles to a pair of region wins to improve their overall record to 13-2 and region record to 2-1.
