Some Lexington County holiday events postpone, cancel ahead of potentially rainy weekend

Posted

The threat of a rainy Friday night and Saturday is changing holiday event plans in Lexington County.

The Town of Lexington announced a sweeping range of changes to the schedule of events for its Snowball Festival on Thursday, Nov. 30, less than an hour before the festival was set to kick off.

The schedule for the Christmas Craft Fair (4-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday) and the Friday Carolighting Ceremony (6:30 p.m.) at the Icehouse Amphitheater (107 W Main St.) remain the same, as does the start time for the annual Christmas parade through downtown (3 p.m. Sunday).

But the Snowball Festival is punting a few other elements of its planned programming forward into the month. Planned movie screenings “The Grinch” and “The Santa Clause” will now take place Thursday, Dec. 21 and Friday, Dec. 22, respectively, while the carnival planned for Dec. 2 will move forward two weeks to Saturday, Dec. 16.

The screenings and carnival will still take place at the amphitheater, and admission remains free to all Snowball festivities.

The Capital City/Lake Murray Country regional tourism board is watching the weather ahead of its planned Lake Murray Christmas Light Boat Parade on Saturday (where, should the rain hold off, I will be pitching in as one of the judges).

Should the event have to cancel, the organization will post the news to its social media channels by 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Pine Ridge Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting, scheduled to take place Saturday, is canceled.

“We have continued to monitor the local stations to gather information pertaining to the weather forecast for Saturday and there is strong agreement that while warm, it will rain most of the day; the Weather Channel shows a rain event all day,” Pine Ridge Mayor Daniel Davis writes in a release. “This poses travel concerns before and after the parade event.  After consulting with the parade committee, the town council, and the police department it is out of an abundance of caution that we are compelled to cancel Saturday’s Pine Ridge Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting events. We hope you will join us next year.”

Cayce has canceled the Friday portion of its Christmas in Cayce festivities.

"Due to the forecast of rain, the City of Cayce has cancelled tonight’s Carols Along the Riverwalk," the municipality posted to Facebook. "The safety of our guests, performers, volunteers and staff is always our highest priority; and while we regret having to cancel this beloved event, we look forward to seeing you all next year!"

As of Friday,  the Christmas Traditions event at the Cayce Historical Museum is still on for 6 p.m. Friday.

"Please remember you can enjoy the 35,000 lights on display at Cayce City Hall every night between now and the end of the year at no cost!" the city noted.

West Columbia posted to Facebook late Thursday afternoon that its  Christmas Tree Lighting is on for 6:30 p.m. Friday rain or shine.

"We've got you covered ... literally," the city posted alongise pictures of multiple large tents being set up in front of City Hall.

However, the first of three planned holiday editions of the city's Meeting Street Artisan Market, slated for Saturday, is canceled. The second two weeks, Dec. 9 and 16 from 11 a.m. to 3  p.m. at the market pavilion at 425 Meeting St., are still on.

We will continue to update this page with any additional changes to this week’s holiday events.
