Substitute at Pelion elementary school arrested, accused of assaulting students

A Lexington County School District 1 substitute teacher is accused of assaulting multiple students.

Alice Johnson faces two counts of third degree assault and battery after allegedly assaulting two Forts Pond Elementary students Feb. 1, according to a Pelion Police Department release.

According to the release, one student said that Jonson “picked him up by the neck lifting him off the ground” while another student alleged that Johnson pushed him to the ground. The release adds that no student was injured during the incident.

“We at the Pelion Police Department take the safety of our school children very seriously,” Pelion Police Chief John Rebolj is quoted in the release. “As with any case, we work fervently and thoroughly to investigate every allegation. As for this case, we discovered the allegations were founded; therefore, our officers obtained warrants for Ms Johnson’s arrest.”

Rebolj told the Chronicle that Johnson turned herself in Feb. 13 and was given a $1,000 surety bond by a Lexington County Bond Court judge. He added that no additional charges will be brought to the case.

Lexington 1 administrators received a report about unprofessional conduct by a substitute teacher, the district told the Chronicle, adding that Forts Pond administration immediately notified district administration and an investigation was started. This included Forts Pond administrators contacting the parents and guardians of the students involved to inform them of the investigation.

Following the start of an investigation, abiding by district procedures, Forts Pond’s School Resource Officer was notified and the Pelion Police Department began their own investigation.

Lexington 1 said Johnson was placed on administrative leave and removed from the district's list of eligible substitutes. The district secures most of its substitutes through a partnership with Kelly Education.

Kelly Education is deeply troubled by the reports of inappropriate behavior involving our employee,” Kelly Education told the Chronicle. “The safety and welfare of the students we serve are our top priorities, and we take these matters seriously. “

The district said it continues to work with the Pelion Police Department and Kelly Education in order to ensure that the situation is addressed accordingly.

Kelly Education likewise said it is cooperating with Lexington 1 administration and police, saying that pending the results of the police investigation, Johnson is currently removed from all future assignments.

The Chronicle hasn’t yet been able to confirm how long Johnson has substituted in the district where else she has served as a substitute.

As to its hiring and screen process, Kelly Education said that all employee and substitute educators undergo rigorous screening and background checks.

“Our screening process includes a criminal records check, including crimes against children, and a search of the National Sex Offender Registry,” it said. “We also adhere to state and district requirements for screening. No background concerns related to the employee were identified.”

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
