Touchstone Energy Cooperative Bowl Selects 6 Chronicle Country Players

Posted

More Chronicle Country players will take part in post-season all-star football games this year.

The Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl selected six seniors for its Dec. 10 game at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach. It takes place a week before the Dec. 17 Shrine Bowl at Viking Stadium in Spartanburg where Dutch Fork running back Jarvis Green and defensive back Landon Danley will play for the South Carolina Sandlappers.

Duke wide receiver/defensive back commit Apollos Cook of Airport was the lone local player picked for the North team.

Five players were selected to the South team. Elon quarterback commit Tanner Staton of Brookland-Cayce, running back Jonah Norris of Lexington, linebacker Chandler Perry of Dutch Fork, offensive lineman Blake Cooke of Gilbert and defensive lineman Max Drag of Chapin.

Drag’s head coach, Justin Gentry, will lead the North team. Spring Valley’s Robin Bacon will coach the South team.

“This whole process has been awesome,” Gentry said. “As coaches, we began evaluating film last spring and I can honestly say that the talent in South Carolina is as good as there is in the country. I am really looking forward to meeting all the players and getting to work.”

“My coaches’ tireless work of getting film and nominations has been a big plus,” said Bacon, whose coaching staff will include Larry Poole of Pelion. “I feel really good about the team we put together because of all the hard work and meetings over the last six months. We spent hundreds of hours looking at film and researching players.”

On Dec. 8, players from both teams will be paired with local children for a holiday shopping spree at the Myrtle Beach Target. Then, on Friday, while the senior selections are at TopGolf for an evening of entertainment, the Joanne Langfitt Showcase will feature 120 of the state’s best juniors in a skills challenge at Doug Shaw.

Altogether, this prestigious event is only improving for coaches, players, and their families.

“It’s bigger, better and more financially secure than ever,” said Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Game Director Scott Earley, a former Lexington head coach. “We’re excited about TopGolf. We’re really excited about the Joanne Langfitt Junior Showcase. We hope we can get some great weather and continue to show off the Touchstone Energy Bowl and the Joanne Langfitt Junior Showcase the best we can.”

Advance-purchase tickets are now available online at touchstoneenergybowl.com/tickets for $25. On game day at the stadium, tickets will cost $30 each. School group rates will also be available through South Coaches Athletics Coaches Association.

Fans in attendance at the game will also see the half-time presentation of the 2022 Mr. Football award, given to the state’s top senior football player.

Gray Collegiate Academy running back K.Z. Adams was a 2021 finalist after becoming the first player in state history to rush for over 3,000 yards in a season. Hilton Head linebacker Jaylen Sneed won the award previously won in 2014 by running back Matthew Colburn of Dutch Fork and in 2011 by wide receiver Shaq Roland of Lexington.
