West Columbia airport gets new options for travelers on both sides of TSA

Posted

Food and drink options at Columbia Metropolitan Airport have recently expanded, allowing airport travelers four new options.

Carolina Concessions, LLC held its ribbon cutting on March 27 unveiling the airport’s newest eateries which include Samuel Adam’s Columbia Brewhouse, Jimmy John’s, Dunkin’ and Columbia’s own Friendly Caterer To-Go.

Herbert and Sandra Sims, a husband-and-wife catering duo, are the owners of Carolina Concessions, LLC and they are from the Columbia area and have now brought their catering experience to the metropolitan airport.

“Years and years ago, you used to come to the airport to eat,” said Sandra. While the brew house, Jimmy John’s and Dunkin’ are located inside of airport security, Friendly Caterer To-Go is located close to the main lobby outside TSA security allowing airport visitors and the public to access the Sims’ signature items.

“We’ve been in the catering business for nearly 30 years,” Sandra said. “Now we have Friendly Catering in the airport. … You do not have to fly to dine in. We will bring to the curb for you.”

The Sims have made food service and catering more than just a business. It’s their way of life.

Herbert is the head chef behind Friendly Catering and also has a love of barbecue, so having a barbecue eatery is especially exciting for the couple.

“The BBQ Pitt is my husband’s,” said Sandra. “He makes his own barbecue sauce. It’s taken about 15 years to perfect.”

Sandra is quick to dote on her husband’s cooking. “I fell in love with my husband’s fried chicken.”

By the way, the southern fried chicken is a menu item at the Friendly Caterer.

These new food options are all a part of the airport’s master plan to improve air travel for passengers and visitors. As reported by The Chronicle in February, the airport saw a 16% increase in passengers between 2022 and 2023, thus experiencing recovery post-pandemic.

As for future food options coming to the West Columbia airport, Sandra says she is looking at expanding in the future with Italian flavors.
