It did not come easy, but Brookland-Cayce recorded a 5-4 win in extra innings over Beaufort in the S.C. High School Class 4A District 7 baseball elimination game Saturday at Fort Knox.
The Bearcats took a 3-0 lead, only to lose it when the Eagles scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning. Brookland-Cayce managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th when Jordan Wise scored with 2 outs on an error. In the Bottom of the 8th, 8th-grader Hayden Thomas had a walkoff RBI  single to score Reed Charpia and end the game. Pitcher Aubrey Richardson got the win for the Bearcats.

"We looked good, but then they went up after we made a couple errors," Brookland-Cayce head baseball coach Rusty Charpia said.  "My 8th-graders had struggled, but they stepped up at the end of the game. We have a very bright future."
With the win, Brookland will face archrival Airport again on Monday in the District final.  Airport is undefeated in the double-elimination tournament and the Bearcats would have to beat Airport twice to advance to the Lower State playoffs.

Ace pitcher Adam Krissinger will start the first game against the Eagles.
"We've got to go over to Airport and play," the elder Charpia said. "We'll have to play almost mistake free baseball to have a chance."

Ashley Ridge 7, Lexington 5
The 2019 season came to an end Saturday for the Wildcats.
Lexington had a 2-0 lead in the Top 2nd when the Swamp Foxes scored 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning. They added 2 more in the 3rd to go up 6-3, but the Wildcats cut the deficit to 6-5 in the 5th inning.
Ashley Ridge added an insurance run in the Bottom 6th and Lexington's final threat ended with a fielder's choice.
This was only the 2nd loss in 9 games for teams in Region 5-5A. River Bluff, Dutch Fork and Chapin can clinch District titles on Monday.

Gray Collegiate 6, Barnwell 3
The War Eagles will play host to Latta in the Class 2A Lower State District 7 final on Monday.

Batesburg-Leesville 12, Southside Christian 7
Cale Salter struck out 10 batters and Matthew Boozer had 3 hits, 3 RBI and closed out the game in the 7th to lead the Panthers to the Class 2A Lower State District 2 playoffs.
Brett McEwen, Kolby Craps and Andy Chavez all drove in 2 runs for Batesburg-Leesville, which will head to Kershaw to face Andrew Jackson again, this time for the District title.
