A Lexington County Fire Service firefighter died in the line of duty Friday.

Paul Quattlebaum’s unit made a medical call around 3:30 pm Friday when he and his partner saw a wreck on Fairview Road.

When they stopped to check, Quattlebaum was hit by a semi-truck.

Quattlebaum died from injuries at the hospital.

“Paul faithfully served throughout his career,” Lexington County Fire Chief Mark Davis said. “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the County of Lexington are with his family.”

The native of Batesburg-Leesville served the Fire Service 22 years. He began as a volunteer firefighter in 1997 and was promoted to fire engineer in 2002 and as a ride-up captain in 2017.

He was a Marine Corps lance corporal before receiving a medical discharge due to injury.
