Batesburg man dead after shooting in front of local house

Posted

A Batesburg resident is dead after a July 7 shooting.

William Mark Bedenbaugh, 56, was shot and killed in front of a house on Simaria Highway.

According to the incident report, Lexington County Sheriff Department’s Deputy Joshua Vicari responded to the call and was informed that someone had been shot.

Upon arriving at the scene Vicari observed Bedenbaugh on the ground near the roadway where Lexington County EMS were attempting life-saving measures, the report states.

EMS declared Bedenbaugh dead.

According to the Lexington County Coroner's office, a forensic autopsy performed at MUSC in Charleston confirmed that Bedenbaugh died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

“He was shot by another man once in the upper left chest,” the office posted to Facebook.

Adam Myrick, public information officer for the department, told the Chronicle that the department is not actively seeking a person of interest or suspect as part of their work on this case, adding that no arrests have been made.

According to the incident report, Vicari made contact with a woman in the front yard of the home who was there with her juvenile son.

The incident report states that a woman in the front yard of the home was standing with her juvenile son and made contact with Vicari.

“[She] said that [redacted] came over causing issues and calling her a ‘slut,’” the report states. “She said [redacted] also threatened to kill her brother, [redacted], who was also on the scene at that time. [She] said [redacted] then came at her, as if to grab her in some way, and that [redacted] shot [redacted].”

The woman’s account also indicates that an unidentified person left the scene on foot.

The report states that a protective sweep of the home was conducted with nothing being found. The scene was secured with crime scene tape and a crime scene log was started. A K-9 unit, drone team, the major crimes unit, CSI and the coroner’s office were all notified and responded.

With the public details still sketchy, Bedenbaugh’s family mourns his death.

“Mark was a man of many talents and passions. He was a loving father and husband, an avid outdoorsman, and a former business owner,” his obituary states. “He had a heart of gold and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His infectious smile and outgoing personality made him a favorite among his family and friends.”

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
