Busy Irmo intersection closed for the week for water repairs

Posted

A key intersection in Irmo is closed for the week while Columbia Water conducts repairs.

The intersection between Lake Murray Boulevard/S.C. Highway 60 and St. Andrews Road has been the site of ongoing construction efforts since a water main break closed it about four weeks ago.

Now, the intersection is set to be closed for “infrastructure repairs” from Monday, Aug. 7 to Friday, Aug. 11.

“The City urges motorists to reroute accordingly if possible,” Columbia Water posted to Facebook. “Columbia Water apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause. We ask for your patience as we work to improve the infrastructure in your area.”

Suggested detour routes include Carlisle Street, Moseley Avenue, Woodrow Street, Thomas Valley Road and Irmo Drive on one side of Lake Murray Boulevard and College Street, Columbia Avenue,  Woodrow Street, Saint Andrews Road, Fork Avenue and Nursery Road on the other side.

The intersection is a busy one.

According to 2022 traffic counts from the state Department of Transportation, Saint Andrews Road sees 17,700 vehicles each day between Wescott Road and Lake Murray Boulevard and 12,100 between Lake Murray Boulevard and the Richland County line. Lake Murray Boulevard sees 15,500 vehicles between North Lake Drive/S.C. Highway 6 and Saint Andrews Road and 25,600 between Saint Andrews Road and the Richland County line.
