Daughter of River Bluff principal has successful surgery after Hawaii car accident

Posted

The daughter of a Lexington principal injured in a car accident in Hawaii had a successful surgery on her neck July 2.

Bekah Smith, the 18-year-old daughter of River Bluff High Principal Jacob Smith, was injured in a car wreck on the big island of Hawaii June 28. The principal along with his wife and two sons were all in the SUV when it collided with an oncoming car, according to Hawaii Police.

“Responding to a 6:07 p.m. report of a traffic collision, police investigators determined that a 2020 Ford Expedition SUV, driven by a 45-year-old South Carolina man, was traveling west (uphill) on Daniel K. Inouye Highway when it appears to have hydroplaned, spun out, and crossed the center line,” a news release about the incident states. “The Ford Expedition’s right-rear corner then collided with the front of a 2017 Toyota Sienna passenger van, driven by a 32-year-old Hilo man. At the time of the collision the roadway was wet and visibility was low due to fogging.”

A page about Bekah on the website CaringBridge offers more info on the accident.

“While on vacation in Hawaii, Bekah and her family were in a serious car accident on the Big Island," the page states. "They were taken to Hilo Medical Center and it was determined that Bekah needed additional medical care. She was airlifted to Queens Medical Center on Oahu, and mom Crystal went with her. Dad Jacob stayed with the brothers Banks and Jake at Hilo Medical Center on the Big Island.”

Jake is 23, and Banks is 15

“Every member of the family was injured. Jacob and Banks were admitted to the hospital where Banks required surgery," the page adds. "They are out of the hospital and recovering. Crystal and Jake sustained minor injuries that didn't require hospitalization. Sweet Bekah's injuries are serious. She is in the ICU at Queen's in Honolulu. She is scheduled to have surgery to stabilize her fractured C1 vertebrae Sunday. ...  It needs to be repaired in order to protect her spinal cord. She suffered a brain injury that will not require surgery.”

According to a July 2 update to the page, that surgery was a success and she was back in her ICU room, with Jacob and Crystal set to see her shortly thereafter.

Hawaii Police note that officers have initiated a negligent injury investigation into the accident, believing speeding and wet roadways played a role.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
