Gaston man found dead in retention pond at Amazon Fulfillment Center

Posted

A missing person was found dead in a retention pond at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Lexington County.

The county Coroner’s Office reports that it was called to the center on the 4400 block of the 12th Street Extension in the West Columbia area of the county at about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, identifying the body that was seen there as Jerrold George Dejean, 19 of Gaston. He was reported missing Nov. 30.

The fulfillment center is located within the Lexington County Industrial Park off Interstate 77 near the Interstate 20 interchange.

“We’re saddened by this terrible tragedy, and our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones," Amazon spokesperson Branden Baribeau said in a statement provided to the Chronicle. "We‘re working to support them and our employees at CAE1 during this difficult time. We’re also cooperating with law enforcement to support their investigation.”

He didn't respond to the paper's question about whether Dejean worked at the fulfillment center.

Per a provided Lexington County Sheriff's Department incident report, two workers with Palmetto Ground Services, who were on the property to pick up garbage, called about the body.

“[They] advised they had located a subject face down in the water,” the report states. “I observed a subject wearing black clothing laying face down in a retention pond on the property. I observed the subject to appear to have been in the water for some time.”

The coroner's office post to Facebook notes that an autopsy is set to be performed Friday, Dec. 15 at 11:30 a.m. in Charleston, with the office and the sheriff’s department continuing to investigate.

The sheriff’s department posted to social media at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon that it was “in the early phases of a death investigation” after the body was seen in the retention pond.

“Detectives and crime scene investigators are at the location,” the department posted. “Their work will continue for some time. Amazon officials are coordinating with us to ensure the security of the scene.”

The department posted to social media Dec. 5 asking residents to be on the lookout for Dejean, noting that he hadn’t been “seen or heard from him since he was dropped off at work [Nov. 30].”

“Due to some potential sightings on and near Platt Springs Road, we believe he’s walking from place to place,” the department posted Dec. 5.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
