A Lexington High and University of South Carolina alum was featured in a movie that just crossed the billion-dollar mark at the global box office.
Luke Lorick, a Lexington High School Alumni, was featured in a quick clip in the new “Barbie” movie. Lorick, the owner and founder of the Tailgate Challenge, was contacted by Warner Bros. for permission to use one of his blog-style online videos.
“I always hoped that I would be in a movie one day, but if you asked me to say if that was gonna be the 'Barbie' movie, I would have told you you were crazy.”
The video finds Lorick reviewing a Newair Beer Fridge while sitting on the back of a tailgate. Lorick told the Chronicle that he tests out tailgating products through his blog, which ultimately resulted in the founding of his businesses.
In the movie, it appears during a montage depicting Ken’s first interaction with traditional masculinity when he comes to the real world from Barbieland.
According to Lorick, he received an email telling him that they wanted to use one of his videos in the upcoming movie. He told the Chronicle that when he had first received the email, it seemed very “fishy”.
“I get a lot of random emails that are not very legitimate for the vast start doing some research on the actual email address, and it turns out that it was a legitimate Warner Bros. email,” Lorick said. “So I was like, ‘Oh, dang, this might be legit.’”
The owner said he’s typically the one reaching out and trying to get seen, adding that this opportunity fell into his lap.
Lorick said that the opportunity to create a fun resume item, saying “Hey, I was in the ‘Barbie’ movie” is a door for more conversation.
He said he got paid a flat sum for the use of the video, mentioning that he would like to keep the number to himself. He won’t be making money from royalties.
“Barbie,” which had grossed $459 million domestically and more than $1 billion worldwide as of Aug. 8 and is now the highest-grossing film directed by a woman, has become something of a cultural movement with many moviegoers showing up dressed in pink and the hype being further stoked by the movie being released the same weekend as the biopic “Oppenheimer,” with many seizing the opportunity to take in a divergent double feature.
The Tailgate Challenge is a business that Lorick founded in 2012, Lorick started by reviewing multiple tailgate-centered items.
“I’m just going to keep on pushing forward doing those things. I’m passionate about spreading the tailgating gospel and to see where life takes me,” Lorick said. “I never thought that never thought I’d be in the “Barbie” movie.”
