Local Mexican restaurant owner who killed wife’s lover dead after suspected suicide

A little more than a week after being convicted for killing his wife’s lover, a local restaurant owner is dead after a suspected suicide.

Gregorio Leon III, 56, was convicted July 6 of the Valentine’s Day 2016 murder of Arturo Bravos Santos, 28, who was engaged in a romantic relationship with Leon’s wife.

Now, the state Department of Corrections confirms that Leon died the night of July 14 at a local hospital.

“[He] was found hanging in his cell about 12:30 p.m. Friday,” the release states. “Emergency lifesaving measures began immediately. He was transferred to a local hospital, where he died shortly before midnight.

“Leon had a cellmate but was alone in the cell at the time. His death is being investigated as a suspected suicide.”

An autopsy is set to be performed, and the case is being investigated by the state Law Enforcement Division, the Richland County Coroner and the Inspector General’s office of the corrections department.

The Lexington Ledger and Fits News began relaying reports that Leon had died the evening of July 14, with the inmate tracking system VineLink showing that he had been transported to a “hospital/ medical treatment facility” that day.

As of 8 a.m. July 15, VineLink lists Leon as deceased.

At the time of his death, Leon was in the custody of Kirkland Correctional Institute, which according to the Department of Corrections website, “receives, assesses, classifies and assigns all male offenders age 17 and above sentenced to 91 days or more.”

Eric Bland, a local attorney and longtime friend of Leon, announced his death via Twitter.

“I cannot say enough about the kindness and professionalism of the medical staff at Palmetto Prisma, and certainly the law-enforcement officers from the department of corrections who accompanied Greg to the hospital,” Bland tweeted.

Leon, who owned several local San Jose Mexican restaurants, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, the state minimum for murder. He was convicted of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime after tracking his wife using GPS to a Lexington County Park and Ride and firing multiple shots into the back seat where he found Santos with his wife, killing the 28-year-old man.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
