The Catch-Up: Lexington Medical Center to Hold Prescription Drug Take Back Event

Lexington Medical Center will participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 30, with a drive-through site at the West Columbia hospital campus (222 East Medical Ln.). 

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public can drop off expired or unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

Disposal is free and anonymous. Pills, liquids in containers and patches accepted, but not needles.

“Disposing of medications properly helps to keep families and our community safe by preventing accidental poisoning, misuse and overdose,” a press release about the event states. “Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.”

Chefs to Catch Fish on Lake Murray, Then Cook Them in Competition

This weekend, 10 chefs from across the country will arrive in the Midlands to duke it out in the Final Table, an annual competition that tests culinary artists with various challenges.

One of the challenges the chefs will face will take them to Lake Murray on Saturday, where they must catch a fish and then prepare it. 

“The winning chef will not only receive the cash prize, but will also have their winning dish on the menu at the McCutchen House [restaurant on the University of South Carolina campus],” a press release notes.

The competition goes from Friday to Sunday, when the winning chef will be awarded $100,000, with the central public event being a free Family, Food + Fun Outdoor Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday outside the Columbia Museum of Art on Boyd Plaza. Entertainment at the event will be provided by Lexington County’s own, increasingly popular country singer Cody Webb.

Lexington County Getting Another Dollar General

The west of Lexington County is getting another Dollar General, The State reports.

“Per a sign posted at the northeast corner of Pisgah Church and Rawl roads in Lexington, a new Dollar General store is coming soon,” Chris Trainor writes. “Site work has been happening at the corner throughout this week, with heavy machinery clearing trees and demolishing a house there.”

The story notes that the site is less than a half mile from Pleasant Hill Middle and Elementary.

The chain made a move earlier this year in western Lexington County, relocating and updating the format of the location in Swansea, expanding its selection of fresh meats, fruits and vegetables, per a press release.

West Columbia Development Announces First Tenant

The first tenant has been announced for 4West, the mixed-use development that will finish off the four-building Brookland Project near the Congaree River and Gervais Street Bridge in West Columbia. 

The news that Another Broken Egg Cafe is set to open there in the second quarter of 2023 was first reported by the Columbia Regional Business Report.

“The cafe will join the chain’s Devine Street location [in Columbia] and occupy 3,974 square feet of new Class A retail/restaurant space,” Melinda Waldrop writes.

The story notes that Another Broken Egg also has in-state locations in Greenville, Charleston and Mount Pleasant.

“The outdoor dining and bar for Another Broken Egg will create an ambiance on the plaza and future outdoor space with unobstructed views of the river and Columbia skyline,” Estate Inc.’s Matt Mundy is quoted. “There will be bustling public spaces with options for outdoor seating. The location is pedestrian friendly to the river, park amphitheater, local shopping, entertainment and numerous restaurants.”

Man Drowns in Lake Murray, DNR Investigating

The state Department of Natural Resources is investigating a drowning on Lake Murray that occurred on April 25, WIS reports.

Nevin Smith writes that the incident in question occurred near Buffalo Creek.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies responded to the calls at around 11:30 a.m.,” he writes. “The man’s body was found at around 2:54 p.m. First responders used wide scan sonar and SCDNR rescue divers were able to recover him.”

The story notes that investigators stated the man wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

“A couple was visiting from Pennsylvania and were renting a home in the area for a month,” Greg Lucas of DNR is quoted. “The husband and wife went fishing this morning when the husband fell into the water.”
