White Knoll High receives bomb threat, third threat received two weeks into new school year

Posted

A Lexington County high school received a bomb threat the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 23, its third since classes resumed for the year on Aug. 9.

Per communication shared with families, the school entered a “Hold” safety precaution while law enforcement and school administrators conducted a sweep of the building and campus.

“Our school continues to be targeted with un-credible bomb threats sent via anonymous tip lines. We share your frustration,” Principal Nicholas Pearson writes in an email. “Hopefully, however, it will help to reassure the White Knoll High family that school and district administrators are on constant alert and continue to explore all possible avenues.”

The previous two threats were received Aug. 15 and 16 and were deemed unlikely to be credible.

According to the statement sent to families, multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in responding to these threats, adding that one of the main challenges is that they are reported through an anonymous third-party tip platform. The entity can’t or won't give law enforcement the information needed for information technology experts to locate the source of the illegal threats.

“The district security team is doing everything they can do to try to gain access to the source information.” Pearson writes.

The principal adds that the district's security team and school leaders continue to work with law enforcement to consider all safety options. The school has said that there is now an increased security presence on campus.

According to the email, there have been several White Knoll students who have been referred to the district's hearing officer for serious disciplinary violations, with student hearings having been or being conducted currently. Many of the students who have been referred will not be returning to the campus.

“The district is strictly enforcing disciplinary violations,” Pearson writes. “We are required to provide due process to every student who is accused of violating safety rules, and even at the fastest speed, this process requires a little time.”

The Chronicle reached out to the district but has yet to confirm how they were involved with the recent rash of threats.

According to Libby Roof, chief communications officer for the district, the disciplinary action being taken is not related to the threats but rather to a few fights the school has experienced since the start of the year.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, which has jurisdiction over White Knoll, wasn involved in the response to today's threat.

“We’ve long worked with Lexington County School District 1 administrators to ensure a safe environment is maintained as threats are responded to and investigated.” Capt. Adam Myrick, public information officer for the department, sai.d “Everyone wants as little disruption to the school day as possible, while balancing the sweeping and clearing of buildings and other locations across the campus.”

“The responses to these recent threats show the relationship between the school district and law enforcement is strong," he added. "Once word of the threats came in, we took swift action to make sure the school day ended peacefully for everyone.”
