White Knoll High school receives bomb threat, never believed to be credible

Posted

A Lexington County high school received a bomb threat the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 15, less than a week into the new school year.

Per communication shared with families, a threat directed at White Knoll High School was received by law enforcement this morning.

“The threat had a very low probability of being credible. However, law enforcement, school & district administrators conducted a thorough sweep of the building and campus as a precaution,” Principal Nicholas Pearson writes in an email sent to students, employees and families.

“We are working diligently to minimize any disruptions and to ensure that our school day continues as smoothly as possible. Employees and students can help keep our school safe by remembering to say something if you see something that doesn’t look or feel right.”

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, which has jurisdiction over the school and employs two resource officers there, confirmed that the building was searched.

"We swept the buildings of White Knoll high and checked its campus to ensure the safety and security of all who are working and learning on campus today," Public Information Officer Capt. Adam Myrick told the Chronicle.

"In light of the volume of threats the school received last year, we’re sorry the campus experienced another threat so early in this new school year," Myrick said. "We continue to work with school district administrators to ensure a safe environment is maintained as any threat is investigated. Everyone wants as little disruption to the school day as possible, while balancing the need to sweep buildings and other locations across the campus."

Pearson echoed this sentiment.

“Having a threat directed at our school is concerning and frustrating, especially considering the hard work our employees and students have put in to have a great start to the school year,” he writes. “Please know that we are committed to investigating all threats thoroughly and dealing aggressively with those responsible to the fullest extent of the law, regulations and policy.”

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
