COACHING CHANGES, APPOINTMENTS MADE AT LEXINGTON COUNTY SCHOOLS

Moxie leaves River Bluff wrestling, Liferidge headed to Greer

The past 48 hours has witnessed coaching changes and additions made at Chronicle Country schools:

Evan Moxie (River Bluff - wrestling)

After 5 seasons as River Bluff wrestling coach, Evan Moxie is leaving the program he led to its 1st state title.

Moxie accepted a position as an administrative assistant at Westwood High School Wednesday.

During Moxie’s tenure, the Gators won 4 straight Region 5-5A titles, 2 Lower State titles and defeated Rock Hill 31-30 in 2017 for the Class 5A title.

In additions, several wrestlers including Sam Emery and William Butler won individual titles. He previously coached at Dutch Fork and Cardinal Newman High Schools.

Former assistant coach Joe Cummings was named the new River Bluff wrestling coach.

Devin Liferidge (White Knoll)

Another former Bailey Harris player turned head coach will be leading an Upstate program next season.

The Lexington High graduate was officially named the new boys’ basketball coach at Greer High School. He leaves White Knoll High School after 4 seasons to take over a Yellow Jackets’ program where he previously served as a varsity assistant coach and head junior varsity coach.

"I’ve always been a believer that in high school sports,” he told the Greenville News. “Those teams should reflect the community. "Greer is a hard-working, blue-collar community. I know ‘Greer Grit’ is often used on social media, and I think that’s very appropriate. We want to be tough-nosed and we want to get after people defensively."

Liferidge played at North Greenville University after graduating from Lexington High School. He took his 1st job as a junior varsity coach at Blue Ridge in 2005 before heading to Greer the 1st time.

In 2007, Liferidge took over a winless program at Williston-Elko. Within 3 years, he had the Blue Devils in the Class A Upper State final.

Liferidge moved to Fairfield-Central in 2011 and led the program to the post-season in each of his 4 seasons. He replaced Jason Cochcroft at White Knoll in 2016.

Liferidge heads to an Upstate region where former Lexington player Thomas Ryan has led Dorman to 4 consecutive Class 5A titles.

“Happy for you coach,” Jalen Jennings told his coach on Twitter. “Appreciate all the lessons not only on but especially off the court you’ve taught me.”

Assistant coach Darrick Cureton will take over the program on an interim basis.

Marquett Carr (Chapin boys’ basketball)

The former Midland Valley standout found himself having to take steward of the program as his former high school head coach John Snelgrove battled cancer.

Snelgrove succumbed to the disease in March. On Tuesday, the interim tag was officially taken off Carr.

“Coach Carr is a great person to be around and is a mentor to everyone he comes in contact with at Chapin,” former Chapin player Max Harrell said on Twitter. “Can’t wait to see what he does with the program moving forward.”

ASHLEY BRUNER (Gray Collegiate boys’ basketball assistant coach)

The 3-time defending Class 2A boys’ basketball champions will have another former Gamecock on its coaching staff.

Bruner announced she will join the program as an assistant with fellow former South Carolina player Brandon Wallace with the varsity team. She will also coach the freshman team at Gray Collegiate.

“We’re going to let her put her touch on things,” Gray Collegiate boys coach Dion Bethea said. “She brings a lot of toughness too with the way she played.”

This is not Bethea’s 1st time with a Bruner on his team. Her brother, Tommy, was a 2-time state champion with the War Eagles and won Big South Freshman of the Year at USC-Upstate.

Ironically, another former Gamecock will appear in Chronicle Country next weekend for a 3-day camp. New Ridge View boys’ assistant Khadijah Sessions will hold a Ksessionshoops Basketball Camp July 7-9 at the new Barr Road Sports Complex for boys and girls ages 8-11.

The fee is $75 and registration starts Monday at the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission website (www.lcrac.com) in the section for Barr Road Sports Complex.
