Lexington, Brookland-Cayce standouts win Athlete of the Week as seasons near end

Posted

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners came in clutch for their teams in some of the season’s most important matches.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Will Burgess

Will Burgess was voted Athlete of the Week after a solid outing for Lexington’s baseball team.

Burgess had an impressive week from the plate against region rival White Knoll, going 7-8 in his at-bat attempts. He went 3-4 in game one, recording a double and an RBI. He was perfect in games two and three, going 4-4 with an RBI.

This string of games was a strong bounce-back for Burgess after struggling in the South Carolina Diamond Invitational over spring break. The senior has been a consistent hitting threat all season for the Wildcats.

Lexington swept White Knoll to improve to 6-3 in conference play. The team had one game scheduled for Wednesday before ending the season with a three-game series against Dutch Fork.

Hailey Jiminez-Cortez

Brookland-Cayce soccer standout, Hailey Jiminez-Cortez, helped the Bearcats win two of their three contests last week.

She made major contributions in the team’s final game of the week versus Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Jiminez-Cortez scored four goals for Brookland-Cayce as the team went on to win 12-1.

The Bearcats are 12-5-2 this year and 5-3 in region games. Jiminez-Cortez has been the go-to goal scorer, leading the team with 19 this season in 13 games.

Brookland-Cayce has five games left this season, including two region games that could bump them up or down in the standings. Jiminez-Cortez will need to continue her exceptional play if the Bearcats want to reach their peak.
