Posted

The final month of the spring sports season has begun and two players got the action going with exciting performances to earn Athlete of the Week.

A baseball star from Irmo and a lacrosse star from Lexington were voted the winners of the weekly honor after lifting their teams to key wins in their region season. With only a handful of games left, these performances were clutch and kept their teams in playoff contention.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Tye Rivers

Irmo baseball’s Tye Rivers was voted Athlete of the Week after helping the Yellow Jackets pick up two additional region wins last week.

Rivers went 1-2 in the first game of the week against Ridge View. He also registered a walk and co-led the team in RBIs with two for the game.

In the second contest against the Blazers, Rivers went 2-3. He opened things up in the first inning with a triple for the Yellow Jackets, earning his one RBI for the game in the process.

Four games into region competition, Irmo is 4-0 and sits tied for first with A.C. Flora and Lugoff-Elgin entering this week. The team has recovered nicely from the six-game losing streak they held entering region play.

Lily Sundell

Lexington lacrosse’s Lily Sundell was voted Athlete of the Week after her team picked up two crucial wins to keep Lexington in second place in the region standings.

Sundell was a key piece of the Wildcats’ success last week. She scored five goals and four assists across the two games and earned the team many extra possessions with ground balls and successful draws.

Sundell scooped seven ground balls in the first game of the week against River Bluff, tying a Lexington single-game record. She added three goals, an assist, four caused turnovers and seven draws won to her stat line.

The sophomore scored two goals in the second game against White Knoll but also got her teammates involved adding three assists. She scooped three ground balls and won another seven draws to keep the Wildcats ahead of the Gators, not just in the game but in the standings as well.
